Lakeland, suitably named after its 38 lakes, is a city located in Polk County alongside Interstate 4 and between two Florida’s major cities, Orlando and Tampa.
Due to its placement between these two cities, Lakeland has often been overlooked; however, relatively low housing cost has helped the city become a favorite spot for retirement and family living.
Unlike Tampa and Orlando, Lakeland does not have a well-established tourist industry; yet, residents here have employment options in other fields such as transportation, education, and health care. Major employers in Lakeland include Publix, Amazon and Geico as well as local employers such as the Florida Polytechnic University and the Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
One of the advantages of being a Lakeland resident is having easy access to world-famous attractions like Walt Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando and to the most beautiful beaches in St. Pete and Clearwater. Within the city, however, Lakeland residents still enjoy a small-town feel and a tight-niche community where neighbors know each other.
Lakeland is home to the Polk Museum of Art, named as one of the Top 10 art museums in Florida and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution; the Florida Southern College, famous for the largest on-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture; the Hollis Garden, which showcases more than 10,000 flowers and Florida indigenous plants’; and the annual SUN ‘n FUN Fly-in Festival, a week-long fly-in airshow held during late March or early April.
Residents in Lakeland also enjoy of local retail stores such as Target, Walmart, and Publix; two malls, one indoor in North Lakeland and one outdoors in South Lakeland, and over 40 places to eat and drink, take yoga classes and more.
Real estate investors should consider Lakeland whether they’re looking to buy, rent or build properties. Lakeland has changed over the years and it continues to grow, develop and attract residents looking for the perfect retirement spot or families looking for a forever home.
